Presentation Title: Electromagnetic Nondestructive Evaluation: Breaking the diffraction limits, IEEE-APS Young Professional Ambassador Talk (ASNT Golden Gate Section)

Presentation Summary: Rapid evolution of sensor technology, computational resources, and data science has enabled advances in electromagnetic (EM) sensing and nondestructive evaluation (NDE) techniques. These techniques have relevance for a broad range of industries, such as aerospace, civil, environmental, biomedical, and advanced manufacturing. Despite these advances in technology, there remains a crucial need for the maturation of characterization techniques that allow for the rapid inspection of low-contrast objects with fine resolution at large standoff distances, as well as over large physical areas. In this talk, I will provide a summary of different EM systems spanning from the static to quasi-static to dynamic wave propagation frequencies, for a wide range of diagnostic applications. The EM NDE problem is multi-disciplinary in nature and engages development of forward and inverse solutions for new sensors, instrumentation, and computational methods for understanding the underlying physics. Specifically, I will be discussing: (1) real time imaging algorithms, (2) compact EM sensor systems, (3) numerical methods for accurate modeling of complicated environments and (4) signal processing techniques for improving the detection capability. This talk is affiliated with the 2023 IEEE Antenna & Propagation Society (AP-S)-Young Professional Ambassador Program. The objective of the IEEE APS-YP Ambassador program is to inspire, inform and involve AP-S Young Professionals on a variety of topics both technical and non-technical to enhance their interest and engagement in the field of Antennas and Propagation by delivering the talks at various chapters/sections virtually.

Speaker Bio: Dr. Saptarshi Mukherjee received the B.Tech. degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering from the National Institute of Technology, Durgapur, India, in 2013, and the Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI, USA, in 2018. He is an Applied Electromagnetics Staff Scientist at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL). Dr. Mukherjee’s research interests include nondestructive evaluation methods in advanced manufacturing, computational geosciences, imaging and inverse problems and high-power microwave devices. He has authored 4 patents and over 24 technical papers. He was nominated as one of the 2023 IEEE Antenna & Propagation Society Young Professional Ambassadors and currently serving as the chair of the American Society for Nondestructive Testing (ASNT) Research Symposium, chair of the ASNT Research Council Program Committee, and chair of the ASNT Golden Gate Section. He has served as the chair of the Electromagnetic Nondestructive Evaluation workshop at LLNL and a session chair for 8 international conferences. He received the National Science Foundation International Research Fellowship in 2015, ASNT Graduate Fellowship award in 2017, ASNT Travel Grant award in 2018, Atmospheric Earth & Energy Sciences Division (LLNL) stand-out awards in 2021 and 2022 and Physical & Life Sciences Directorate (LLNL) External Leadership Recognition award in 2023.
