About the Event

Presentation Title: NDE of Additively manufactured surfaces using X-ray CT

Speaker: Andy Townsend, Nondestructive Evaluation Engineer, Lawrence Livermore National Lab

Presentation Summary: This presentation will cover the importance of additively manufactured surfaces, the initial surface-from-CT extraction process, the relationship between voxel size and surface characterization, scales of interest, suitable surface determination methods and characterization of re-entrant features.

Speaker Bio: Andy Townsend is and Engineer in the Nondestructive Evaluation Group at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) in Livermore, CA. Current work includes X-ray radiography and computed tomography research, characterizing complex materials and structures. In 2016 he published the first extraction and characterization of areal surface texture data from X-ray CT scans. He was a quality manager in the aerospace industry for 20 years before transitioning to research. Dr. Townsend has authored ten peer-reviewed journal papers. He holds a PhD in Mechanical Engineering and a bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Huddersfield University, UK.
