New Paradigms in NDE: Data, Model and Learning for NDE 4.0 and beyond
Prof. Yiming Deng, Ph.D.
Associate Professor,
Nondestructive Evaluation Laboratory (NDEL),
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Michigan State University
Abstract
It is vitally important that as new manufacturing technologies and new types of materials emerge during the 4th Industry Revolution or Industry 4.0, we have to have viable alternatives for inspecting the resulting product nondestructively. The advances in automation, digitization, digitalization, communication, and artificial intelligence (AI) enabled cyber-physical systems have fostered the new concepts and practices of NDE 4.0.
The presentation will first review the history of NDE from Industry 1.0 to Industry 3.0 (early 2000s), and focus on some NDE 3.0 research work at NDE Laboratory, MSU before 2011. Second, the concepts of integrating data, model and learning for smart NDE techniques that employ multi-sensory data acquisition, communication and processing/computing, uncertainty quantification as well as robotics for characterizing damage in components, which are inherently anisotropic, have complex structural geometries, and are designed to operate in hostile environments. Several recently completed and ongoing research projects at NDEL will be discussed to demonstrate the proposed new NDE 4.0 framework that could possibly enable the next-generation system health management and assure the optimized manufacturing and in-service maintenance.
